Five Ways to Disable the Gboard Popup on Keypress

Google’s Gboard virtual keyboard is right now the go-to option for users who want a faster and more efficient way to input text on their Android device. With a host of awesome features such as Glide Typing, Google Search, Voice Input, and Gesture Recognition, Gboard is literally an all-in-one solution for better typing experience on your mobile phone. We all love new things that make our lives easier. However, not everyone is used to the constant appearance of popup windows when we are using any app on our phones. Sometimes these popups become just too much and we need to disable them permanently or at least temporarily until we get used to them again. Here are 5 ways you can disable the Gboard popup on keypress if you want to continue using it while keeping those annoying popups at bay:

Change Gboard’s default behaviour

The first thing you can do to prevent the Gboard popup from appearing every time you press a key is to change the default behaviour of the app. You can do this by heading to the Gboard app’s settings, and then choosing the Behaviour tab. Gboard’s default behaviour – when the keypress is registered, the app shows a popup, listens for the user’s query, and then starts searching for the query. However, if you want the popup to appear but you don’t want the app to start listening and searching, you can select ‘popup on keypress’ on the Behaviour tab. Thus, the first thing you can do to prevent the Gboard popup from appearing every time you press a key is to change the default behaviour of the app.

Use the lockdown feature

If you are still not satisfied with how Gboard works, you can use its lockdown feature to disable the popup entirely. When you lockdown Gboard, the app will work only as a regular keyboard.Gboard allows you to lockdown the app as many times as you want. So, in case you change your mind and want to use all the app’s features again, simply go back to the app’s settings, choose the ‘Lockdown’ tab, and toggle lockdown off. Lockdown is available in Gboard’s latest version. However, if you don’t see it in the app’s settings, you will have to update Gboard.

Use a third-party keyboard

If none of the above-mentioned methods appeal to you, you can always start using a third-party keyboard. There are many keyboards available on the Google Play Store and most of them do not have the Gboard’s features. Furthermore, using a third-party keyboard will let you disable the popup entirely, which is not possible with the Gboard. Another advantage of using a third-party keyboard is that you can switch to Gboard’s regular behaviour whenever you want to use it. The only downside is that you will lose the advantages of Gboard’s keyboard. However, if you are fine with that, you can simply download any third-party keyboard from the Play Store and select it from the device’s language settings.

Turn off key press recognition

Keypress recognition is the feature that allows Gboard to listen to your query and automatically start searching for it. However, you can turn off this feature of the app to prevent the Gboard popup from appearing. To do so, go to the Gboard app’s settings, choose the ‘Key press recognition’ tab, and then uncheck the ‘Key press’ box. This will disable the Gboard’s key press recognition feature and prevent the app from listening to your query. However, this is not the best way to disable the Gboard popup because the app will no longer function as a virtual keyboard and you will have to use your device’s physical keyboard to type.

Disable Gboard entirely

If all the above-mentioned methods fail to work for you, you can simply disable Gboard and use the device’s physical keyboard instead. Using the device’s physical keyboard without any app will be inconvenient because you will have to use two different apps to input text on your device. However, it is the only way to completely disable the Gboard popup and use your device the way you did before installing Gboard. When you disable Gboard, the app will no longer be available on your device. However, you can simply install it again if you want to start using it.

Conclusion

The Google Keyboard is an excellent virtual keyboard for typing on your Android device. With its plethora of features, it can make your typing experience easier and faster. However, these same features can also be distracting for some users. If you are one of those people who does not like the constant appearance of popup windows, you can use the methods outlined above to disable the Gboard popup on keypress.
